For more than a decade now I’ve been a committed supporter of Fairtrade, which helps farmers, growers and developers to get a fairer trade for the goods they work long days to ensure reach shelves in British shops.
By buying goods with a Fairtrade label on them we, Western consumers, ensure those farmers and growers get paid a fairer wage and get to live and work in better conditions.
From 2012 to 2015 I was Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s first Fairtrade Champion.
I’m Chair of the Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Forum and the East Midlands Representative on the Fairtrade Foundation’s National Campaigner Committee.
I also am Co-Founder and Co-Ordinator of Liberal Democrat Fairtrade Future, the first grass-roots Fairtrade movement in a major political party.
At the October 2014 Liberal Democrat national Autumn Conference in Glasgow I successfully moved an amendment which got unanimous support which got support for Fairtrade into the party’s official platform.
That speech was broadcast live nationwide on the BBC Parliament TV network.
In February 2020, I represented Fairtrade campaigners at the Fairtrade Fortnight reception at the Houses of Parliament.
